i'm going to present my "critical path," as far as my design philosophy / world view goes, and how this path of events eventually inspired me to attempt the project i've been working on. anyhow, just put some of the sketched story boards up on my flickr. i like em', but i need to get movin', because in eleven days i have story time with about six hundred "designers".

yesterday & today, the lovely Aaron Atchison has dedicated himself to setting up a little space for us to work. It's in progress, and for all of you out there who are dying to contribute, you already know who you are, wink wink nudge nudge, say no more say no more. For in only a few short cosmic moments (ie days/week) we are going to have a static ip, and a fresh activecollab to start hashing out the foundation of d-camp. So stay tuned, keep your decoder rings handy, and, as always, email if you want to know more.

proposal ROUND ONE

the following is the initial proposal for a Knight Foundation grant i'ma working on...
i'm in the process of puttiing up a selection of slides from my last presentation, that should happen today or tomorrow, sooooo

01 what makes this idea unique? ( 350 words):
>The uniqueness of this idea lies in the creation of a well-organized amalgam. The idea itself, including many of its goals, may not be that novel, but it is innovative. By simplifying the way we inform, collaborate & cooperate with each other virtually, an opportunity arises for far more creative solutions to complex situations. What I’m proposing is the development of a new generation of social networking utilities that focus more on the exchange and development of ideas and concepts, not as separate occupational cultures, but as the passionate pursuits of individuals. By using meta-tags to create a foundation for the organic development of general information cultures, sub and counter cultures emerge, tailored to the specific needs of each user. The resulting individual atmospheres create a stronger overall network through the overlapping of real interests, creating relationships deeply rooted in relevance, accreditation & trust. These individuals become a part of “local” networks, and being the product of shared interests, gain the ability to work on any scale, from small town PTA workspaces and public discussion forums to the development of goods, physical or intangible, for production and distribution on a global level. The opportunity we share is only limited by the collective creativity of the users involved. >To navigate the network, a data visualization can be used to express the nature of relationships more intuitively, catering to the natural click-through process. The goal being to make the information contained within the network as accessible as possible to as many people as possible. Similar ideas have arisen in the proprietary software community, most notably Thinkmap SDK and now with Clearspace from Jive, but their focus is to provide data to only a select few. In the proposed model we see a removal of hierarchy, in a control and power sense, through availability. If certain information is of no interest to a particular individual it simply doesn’t exist in their immediate atmosphere, the difference being that it remains readily available should the need suddenly arise. [EMPOWERMENT]

02 who else would want to use it, and why? (150 words):
>A better question is; why aren’t more people using the tools already readily available to create a better virtual environment for themselves? The truth is that relevant information exchange is valuable to everyone; it just needs to be made more intuitive to become accessible. Initially, the hope is to attract students, academics and professionals from complimentary fields of study, that have a strong grasp on the concepts and theories guiding the development of the current and coming iterations of the web. Taking a queue from the open source software movement, the development of this organization should be set in motion by, and managed by itself. Thus creating unique solutions, for what are sure to be, new issues in many fields, especially those concerned with the organization of social networks and information. [PROFESSIONALS & AMATEURS]

03 why are you the best person or organization to develop this project? (350 words):
>I can’t honestly say that I’m the best person to develop this idea, but the nature of this project isn’t about being the best. It’s about finding a way to develop ideas you’re passionate about with help from a community just as interested in either developing the same ideas or seeing what they believe is a good idea come to fruition. In a way I guess you could say that I’m an instigator, just small piece of the best organization available, every potential user. > My technical training is in the utterly massive field of industrial design, particularly in the areas of interaction and usability. I have a penchant for deconstructing interfaces and data visualizations, and an appetite for understanding the nature of social organization. These are the things I enjoy, these are the ideas I want to work with and develop. This is a future I see as being not only possible but necessary to the productive development of a global culture. On the Internet we have an opportunity make a difference, an opportunity to once again become relevant as individuals rather than actors in a society controlled by industrial information. We have the potential to be, do, learn about whatever we think is pertinent. [SCALABLE ACTION]
